Benzodiazepines or known as sedatives are the most prescribed drugs in the world. In 1996 the World Health Organization issued guidelines for substance dependence programs, one of which was “Rational Use of Benzodiazepines”. The research conducted by Wood, Katz and Winger in the guidelines, states that 80 percent of Benzodiazepine drugs are prescribed by general practitioners and non-psychiatric specialists, these are the second largest drug after medication for cardiac and blood vessels. Various types of benzodiazepines are known in the market with patent and generic names; famous types include Diazepam, Alprazolam, Bromazepam, Estazolam, Nitrazepam, Lorazepam, Clobazam etc. Each type of Benzodiazepine is differentiated based on its pharmacokinetic properties. Benzodiazepine drugs are widely used irrationally and not according to the rules or guidelines.
Some of the problems that often occur regarding the use of benzodiazepines, are the use for minor or acute anxiety or given for insomnia in long term use. The use of benzodiazepines in the elderly with high and long doses and the selection of the wrong type can pose a risk of falls, confusion and respiratory problems. Another important thing in the use of benzodiazepines is their potential effect to addiction. Seen from a medical point of view, there are many controversies regarding addiction, some experts argue that addiction is related to increasing doses or tolerance so that if there is no tolerance it means there is no addiction. However, what we need to be understand is the potential occurrence of dependence and withdrawal symptoms in the use of Benzodiazepines is closely related to the dose and duration of use, so the bigger the dose and or the longer the use of Benzodiazepines, the more at risk of addiction.
The misuses of Benzodiazepines from time to time is increasing, a new trend that is sweeping almost all regions in Indonesia. This situation needs responsibility from various parties; for regulation and supervision include the distribution. These cases often create a sense of “fear” for many pharmacies in prescribing any type of Benzodiazepine. In order to solve these particular problems related to Benzodiazepines, Indonesia Psychiatric Association (PDSKJI) Bandung Branch, in collaboration with Faculty of Medicine Universitas Jenderal Achmad Yani, West Java Mental Health Community, intend to hold a Scientific Meeting and Master Class; Benzodiazepine : Regulation, Guidelines and Practices . We invite all relative parties to exchange their knowledge and experience , to collaborate in research both national and international to solve the misuse of Benzodiazepines.
